  • 6-29-2023] UMES students and faculty Vicleese Sloan, Fasil Tesdaye Amado, Cameron Smith, ShoreBryan Stivell Campbell, Dr. Willie Brown, and Dr. Lanju Mei received the 2023 ASEE Aerospace Division’s Meritorious Student Paper Award for a paper entitled: “Learners’ Peer-to-Peer Interactions of Aerospace and Aviation Education with Unmanned Aerial Systems Designs Using Data Methods Integration”.   • [5-17-2023] Dr. Lanju Mei has received funding support from the Princeton Alliance for Collaborative Research and Innovation (PACRI). Her research is focused on tissue scaffold design and fabrication based on microelectromechanical system (MEMS) manufacturing techniques for the reconstruction of large bone defects resulting from trauma, diseases, and tumor resection. The MEMS Lab in the department is equipped with a clean room that enables MEMS manufacturing of various sensors and devices for biomedical engineering, chip manufacturing and processing applications.   • [5-16-2023] Junior and aviation Science major Ms. Fallon Orcurto has been awarded the Freeman-Asia Scholarship. She is the first UMES recipient of this award. We would like to recognize her hard work, vision and commitment to studying language, to make study abroad an integral part of her university experience and working toward becoming a global citizen.   • [5-23-2022] On Saturday, May 21st, 2022, from 9am-2pm, faculty and students Dr. Walker, Mr. Ibrahim, Mr. Julius, Mr. Fekadu, and Dr. Jin in the department participated in the Great STEM Expo at Salisbury Middle School to showcase engineering and aviation technologies to the NeXgen STEM academy students and their family in the county.   • [3-17-2022] Republic Airways, an Indianapolis-based regional passenger airline, made a St. Patrick’s Day donation of $20,000 to support the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s aviation science program. Link.

  • [12-16-2021] The aviation science program received FAA 141 certification of the flight program for both Private and Instrument training. Mr. Edward Brink passed a checkride with an FAA inspector to officially become the 141 Chief Instructor of our flight program. Congratulations.

  • [8-3-2021] A group of students from Catonsville Upward Bound of the CCBC toured the Engineering and Aviation Science facility.   The Upward Bound is an intensive enrichment program of low-income and potential first-generation college students.  Dr. Willie Brown, Dr. Ibabia Dabipi, Mr. Julius Ejenavi, and Dr. Jin greeted the students with the aims of helping students with academic enrichment and career exploration in engineering and aviation.

  • [2-10-2020] Dr. Abhijit Nagchaudhuri, Professor of Engineering received a grant entitled “Sustaining a Vertically Integrated Multidisciplinary Team to Enhance Learning, Discovery and Engagement Efforts in Autonomous Systems and Smart Agriculture (2020),”
    from the Maryland Space Grant Consortium. This project will enable UMES engineering students to engage research in smart agriculture based upon artificial intelligence and machine learning. Congratulations to Dr. N !

  • [8-6-2019] 30 Upward Bound Students and 7 teachers supported by college mentors to partake in the first STEM Day event with NASA/AREN project by Dr. Gale and Dr. Willie Brown on July 11. The students were involved in a workshop introduction, design challenge and kite flying. Link.
  • [7-12-2019] Axel Bayingana, a senior student studying Engineering (Mechanical Specialization) at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, has been accepted to the 2019 Station1 Frontiers Fellowship program, a unique and prestigious ten-week residential summer science and technology education, research, and internship program based in the greater Boston region of Massachusetts. Axel was selected from over eight hundred applicants across the nation and the world as a result of a lengthy admissions process. He received a fellowship package worth approximately $15,000.   • [5-2-2019] UMES Engineering students Christopher Blanks (project title: Drink-N-Pour) and Brian Mason (project title: Photoelectric Safety Cones) advanced to the 2nd round of the SU Entrepreneurship Competition on May 2, 2019, each team won $1000 Director’s award. The two students were in Senior Design Project supervised by Dr. Lei Zhang, Associate Professor of Computer Engineering. Link.
  • [4-17-2019] Engineering students Nathan Bane, Ayobami Ogunmolasuyi, Jesudara Omidokun and Justin Derickson conducted research “The study of the intermediate axis theorem in a microgravity environment” under the guidance of Dr. Das. Nathan won first prize for outstanding research in the undergraduate category at the UMES Annual Research Symposium April 16, 2019. Link.

  • [3-14-2019] Dr. Payam Matin, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering received grant award from the Army Research Laboratory to support engineering students for Drone Design Competition to be held at University of Texas El Paso, April 23-25, 2019. The design competition involves design and prototype of a small drone. During the competition, the designed drone must navigate the test course in a predetermined time period. Congratulations to Dr. Matin and the engineering hawks!

  • [2-8-2019] UMES Engineering students Ryan Valente (Captain), Chris Blanks, Robert Perez, and Joshua Seldon participated in the AMIE Design Challenge at the 2019 BEYA STEM Conference in Washington DC on February 8, 2019. The team was coached by Technical Advisor Dr. Jess Donaldson, Mr. Claudio Copello, Mr. Azaria Gezahegn of Northrop Grumman Corporation, as well as Prof. Lei Zhang and Prof. Payam Matin of the Engineering Program, along with the Dean of SBT Dr. Kate Brown. The problem of the design challenge is in Public Safety – How the UMES design team help improve response times and general safety for high school students during emergency situations. link.

  • [11-9-2018] UMES Engineering students participated in the NASA’s zero-gravity (known as zero-g) experimental study through NASA’s citizen-science astronautics program, known as Project PoSSUM. Engineering undergraduate students Nathan Bane, Justin Derickson, Ayobami Ogunmolasuyi, and Jesudara Omidokun built a payload to test solid body rotation experiment in zero-gravity.   • [11-5-2018] Dr. Abhijit Nagchaudhuri, professor of engineering received a new Maryland Space Grant Consortium (MDSGC) award to conduct research “Sustaining a Vertically Integrated Multidisciplinary Team to Enhance Research and Extension Efforts in Precision Agriculture (2019)”. Precision Agriculture has been identified as a relevant approach for coping with the food demands of a growing population in an environmentally responsible manner. This project will fund research in the broader area of precision agriculture including unmanned aerial systems, Farmbot, etc. Congratulations to Dr. Nagchaudhuri !
  • [10-15-2018] Southwest Airline recruiters visited UMES Sep 27 to meet with aviation science students and share employment prospects available at the airline, which is rated among the nation’s top 50 employee-friendly companies. Link.
  • [10-11-2018] Engineering senior Habilou Ouro-Koura was selected for admission to the MIT ACCESS program in the Department of Material Science and Engineering at MIT. The two-day event on October 11-12 aims to expose the student to the opportunities that a graduate education in materials science and engineering at MIT will offer. Congratulations to Habilou. Link.
  • [10-10-2018] The aviation program received Restricted-ATP (airline transport pilot) approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).  This authorization allows our Professional Pilot graduates to enter an airline with 1000 flight hours instead of the normal 1500 hours. The R-ATP status allows UMES’s students to be eligible for hiring by the industry sooner.  UMES will be only the 3rd HBCU in the nation to receive this approval, a distinction that was noted at the recent White House Initiative for HBCUs.   • [9-25-2018] Mr. Tramaine Brown, Inclusion & Diversity of Apple Inc. gave a seminar talk to engineering and computer science students on the application to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund regarding the Apple HBCU Scholars Program. link.
  • [9-18-2018] Aviation science senior Richard Asante received Honda Awards Thurgood Marshall College Fund Scholarships. In partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), Honda has awarded scholarships to five students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for the 2018-19 academic year. The awards are part of an annual scholarship fund Honda established to support students pursuing an education in engineering, supply chain management and manufacturing-related fields.   • [8-20-2018] Aviation Science Program received final certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Provisional Pilot School under CFR §141 of the Federal Aviation Regulations. This certification is for the following pilot ground school courses: Private Pilot, Airplane Single Engine Land, Instrument Airplane and Commercial Pilot, Airplane Single Engine Land. Part 141 Pilot schools are held to a higher standard with regard to instructor credentials, student record keeping and instructional content, and receive yearly inspections from the FAA.   • [8-17-2018] Dr. Nagchaudhuri, professor of engineering, presented at the IEEE/ASME International Conference of Mechatronics and Embedded Systems Applications (http://mesa2018.org/) in Oulu, Finland. Dr. Nagchaudhuri was a session chair at the symposium session in Mechatronics and Embedded Systems Applications in Agriculture at the conference. At the conference, Dr. Nagchaudhuri was inducted into the International Technical Committee. Congratulations to Dr. N! Link.
  • [5-24-2018] The inaugural Aviation Advisory Council meeting was held in the Dean’s Conference Room on May 24, 2018. Council Chair Dr. Geoff Bland of NASA presided over the meeting. Some of the members toured the engineering laboratories, including the Aerospace Lab, and talked to engineering students that participated in the ENGE 150 freshmen engineering design project. The wind tunnel design project is effective at building on theory, practice, testing, scheduling, ad fabrication skills. Link.

  • [4-18-2018] The Engineering Advisory Council spring meeting was held in the Dean’s Conference Room on April 18, 2018. EAC Chair Dr. Ricky Stanfield of Northrop Grumman Technical Service in Princess Anne, MD presided over the meeting. Attendees include members of EAC, faculty, and Interim Dean of SBT Dr. Kate Brown. Issues relating to student learning outcomes, curriculum changes of the engineering program, and the experience and expectations of engineering students in internships and job placement were discussed.

  • [5-2-2017] Chris Hartman, Assistant Professor of Aviation Science and Aviation Coordinator, received five-year NASA Cooperative Agreement grant entitled “AEROKATS and ROVER Education Network” to train the next generation scientists to observe and understand our planet Earth through experiential learning using NASA technology and data in real-world settings. His grant “Building Capacity to Investigate Water and Nutrient Use Efficiency Using Variable Rate Tech & UAV based Remote Sensing in Field Settings” is funded by US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Another grant ” Engineering, Aviation and STEM Teacher Education Majors through Summer Enrichment and other Academic Support Efforts” is funded by NASA through the Maryland Space Grant Consortium.
  • [5-1-2017] Two engineering professors Dr. Ibibia Dabipi and Dr. Abhijit Nagchaudhuri received post tenure review as exemplary in all three areas of teaching, research/scholarship, and service to the University.   • [2-23-2017] Representatives of Parkside High School Career Technology Center (CTE) visited the UMES Engineering and Aviation Science Department, discussed possible collaborations to facilitate the growth of the pre-engineering program at the CTE.
  • [2-11-2017] UMES Engineering students Marquise Johnson, an aerospace major and Shane Randall, a mechanical major, received Student Leadership Award at the 31st BEYA STEM conference, for their academic excellence. The pictures are shown here Link.
  • [2-11-2017] UMES engineering students attended the 31st BEYA STEM conference career fair on February 10 and 11, receiving full time employment and internship offers from major corporations such as the Boeing Company, the Raytheon Company, Northrop Grumman, Boston Scientific, and Lockheed Martin. The fields in which the students were offered jobs include Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, and Computer. Many students who received offers are graduates of high schools in the local regions, including Parkside High School, Wicomico High School, Holly Grove Christian School, and James M. Bennett High School.
  • [2-7-2017] Professor Matthias Gobbert of Mathematics at University of Maryland Baltimore County gave a talk entitled “REU site: Interdisciplinary program in high performance computing” to engineering students about recent advances in high performance computing and its applications in medical research. UMES Engineering senior Ben Whiteley attended UMBC REU site in 2016 under the direction of Professor Gobbert. See link.

  • [11-21-2016] Dr. Tom Maloney, Chief Technology Officer of the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc, gave a presentation on the alternative power arena both for the space program and for defense applications. Dr. Maloney was accompanied by the Honorable Bill Anderson, CEO of Anderson Global Innovation Group and Dr. John J. Allen, Jr., VP of Delmarva Power Region and Chairman of the UMES Board of Visitors.  
  • [11-17-2016] Dr. Marilyn H. Lewis, an Education Programs Specialist with the AETOS Systems, Inc. of Marshall Space Flight Center presented to engineering and aviation faculty and students about the NASA Human Exploration Rover Workshop Opportunity in 2017. The Rover competition is for students to design human-powered rovers to traverse over a half-mile obstacle course of simulated extraterrestrial terrain of craters, boulders, ridges, inclines, crevasses and depressions. https://www.nasa.gov/roverchallenge/competition/index.html

  • [8- 15, 2016] The UMES-Salisbury University Physics/Engineering Dual Degree Articulation Agreement has been signed. According to the agreement, Salisbury University students will spend the first 3 years at Salisbury University and spend another 2 years at UMES to obtain a second degree in engineering. Link
