Bio:
Dr. Illuminati has been teaching at UMES since the Fall of 2015. She uses a systematic approach to deliver content that includes skin anatomy, management of necrotic tissue and bacteria, and factors that affect wound healing, such as nutrition and edema. This approach helps students gain an appreciation for examining and managing patients with integumentary system and wound issues. Dr. Illuminati has been a practicing physical therapist for approximately 13 years. She began her career with Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Maryland where she treated a variety of medically complex patients. She began to focus/specialize in wound care services and later became the manager of the unit. Dr. Illuminati was responsible for supervising the physical therapists on the wound care team and orienting new staff members to their roles and responsibilities. She has over ten years of wound care experience at Johns Hopkins Hospital and was in a supervisory role for 3 of those years. While at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Illuminati served as a member of the Pressure Ulcer and Products committee from 2010 to 2013. After transitioning to Chesapeake Rehabilitation Hospital in Salisbury Maryland, she continues to treat, consult, and function as a resource for patients with wounds. Over the past 13 years, she has treated inpatient and outpatients with wound etiologies that have included venous, arterial, pressure, diabetic, and chronic conditions. In addition, she has encountered atypical diagnoses such as pyoderma gangrenosum, calciphylaxis, and Kaposi sarcoma.
