Adapted Sports Festival

The 3rd year DPT students (Class of 2015) volunteered, along with their professor, Dr. Dennis Klima, at the annual Adapted Sports Festival at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute (formerly known as Kernan) in Baltimore, MD ( www.umrehabortho.org/adapted-sports-program/adapted-sports-festival.htm).

The University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute (Kernan) hosts a one-day Adapted Sports Festival annually to foster awareness about the benefits of adapted sports involvement. The event encourages patients, as well as members of the community with disabilities, to attend and participate in: wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, adapted golf, hand cycling, adapted martial arts, wheelchair dance, and scuba diving

“I was assigned to assist with the wheelchair slalom. I helped guard patients as they went through the obstacle course while the physical therapist taught them how to maneuver their wheelchair. It was a great learning experience!”
Jen, 3rd year DPT student

“The adapted sports festival was a chance for both the volunteers and the participants to come together as a community and learn of the many opportunities available to those who have experienced a traumatic event. From Bocce to dancing to rugby, it was a great day filled with teamwork, encouragement, motivation and even some competition.”
Eric, 3rd year DPT student
