Annual Science Meeting illuminates need for data-savvy grads

Salina Parveen, left, a professor at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and UMES students Robyn Walker-Spencer, REU Undergrad Intern, Esam Almuhaideb, Doctorate Student, and Tahirah Johnson, Master's Student take Oyster samples during a recent outing. “More needs to be learned, though, about pathogens and microbiomes in oysters and seawater and how aquaculture practices, weather events and environmental factors influence them,” said Salina Parveen, a professor at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Parveen recently received a three-year, $600,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture as the project director for a multi-institutional study to address these concerns. They were collecting samples from the Somerset Surf Companies Aquaculture cages in the Tangier Sound near Crisfield MD.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center (LMRCSC) held its 2023 Annual Science Meeting in March.
