Summer internships funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center (NOAA LMRCSC) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) wrapped up on August 3, when interns presented their research findings at a symposium on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore campus.

A project on horseshoe crab populations, led by NOAA LMRCSC Deputy Director Dr. Margaret Sexton, received regional media attention. One of the interns who assisted with the project, Myah Bowie, will become one of the NOAA LMRCSC’s newest fellows in the fall.

Other projects in the NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program in Marine and Estuarine Science included studies of E. Coli strains the Maryland Coastal Bays and the effects of sea level rise on Maryland forests.

The NOAA LMRCSC-funded Geoscience Bridge Program offered four incoming freshmen interested geoscience hands-on experience, lectures, field trips and two for-credit college courses. Three of the four 2023 geoscience interns will attend NOAA LMRCSC Lead Institution UMES in the fall.
