Several fellows graduated from the NOAA LMRCSC in Spring 2024, and each has their own unique, ambitious future plan.
NOAA EPP/MSI LMRCSC-II Fellow Lucia Ramirez-Joseph graduated from Hampton University on May 12 with a Masters Degree in Biology with concentration in Marine and Environmental Sciences. She is spending the summer as a research assistant at the Plum Island Long Term Ecological Research Station in Massachusetts. This fall, she moves on to the Ph.D. program at University of Georgia’s Marine Sciences Department, under the advisement of Dr. Jimmy Nelson. Lucia plans to study ways in which the interaction between predators and their environment has shifted with increasing urbanization and climate change.
NOAA EPP/MSI LMRCSC-II Fellow Glen Collins (left) graduated from University of Maryland Eastern Shore on May 17 with a Bachelor’s degree in environmental science with a concentration in marine science. He will continue his studies at UMES in the Marine, Estuarine & Environmental Science program as an LMRCSC Masters Fellow, under the advisement of Dr. Stephen Tomasetti.
NOAA LMRCSC-II Fellow Nina Clovis graduated from University of Maryland Eastern Shore on May 17 with a Bachelor’s degree in environmental science. She will continue her studies at UMES in the Marine, Estuarine & Environmental Science program as an LMRCSC Masters Fellow, under the advisement of Dr. Ali Ishaque.
NOAA LMRCSC-II Fellow Reese Register (right) graduated from Hampton University on May 12 with a Bachelor’s degree in Marine and Environmental Science. She departs September 19 for Senegal, as a Peace Corps volunteer. For the next two years, she will serve as an Environmental and Forestry agent working with the Senegalese government, farmers, and fishers to improve their local economy. She will also create and lead an outdoor recreational group and act as a community leader, responsible for educating locals about climate change, its effects, and how they can help mediate them.
