Lydia Clark aims to evaluate the effects of environmental stressors, such as rising temperatures and heat waves, on ecologically and economically important species in the Maryland Coastal Bays. Because of the shallow nature of the lagoons and absence of deep areas with cooler waters to serve as thermal refuge, some fish species utilizing the lagoons as nursery areas, especially in the summer months, are vulnerable to projected changes in the environment.

Understanding the influence of environmental changes in nursery areas on fish survival and recruitment to the adult population is essential and should be taken into consideration in stock assessments.
