Nylah McClain participated in the 2017 REU program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, working with mentor Dr. Ali Ishaque and graduate student Chelsea Richardson. They graduated from UMES in 2020 with a B.S. in Environmental Science. Their research involved analyzing the gut content, stable isotopes, and fatty acids of the summer flounder, Paralichthys dentatus.

Upon completion of her B.S. Nylah began pursuing a Ph.D., also at UMES. Nylah conducted research in Japan as a NSEP David L. Boren Fellow from October 2022 to March 2023. They joined the LMRCSC graduate program in Fall 2023 and are being advised by Dr. Ali Ishaque. Nylah’s current research project is analyzing the gut content of the blue crab to investigate the effects of secondary microplastic contamination.
