Signature Events

NOAA LMRCSC Seminar Series

The LMRCSC has established a center-wide seminar series that is attended by center scientists and students. Presentations at these monthly seminars have been by scientists from the center and other institutions, and LMRCSC graduate students who have nearly completed their degree.

Annual Fellows Assembly – Literacy in NOAA Relevant Subject Areas

Each year, the LMRCSC organizes a center-wide workshop to enable a cohort of students to develop literacy in NOAA-relevant science to complement what they learned in their course work at the various institutions. The goals of the workshop are to develop literacy in the fundamentals of NOAA-relevant subject areas and foster transdisciplinary training of the students in marine resource science and management. The workshop aims to provide meaningful interaction among students, faculty and NOAA scientists associated with the Center.

Summer REU Program at UMES – (Funded by NSF and NOAA LMRCSC)

The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) in Marine and Estuarine Science program at the UMES offers paid, ten-week summer internships to undergraduates interested in marine and estuarine science. With the assistance of faculty mentors, program staff and graduate students, interns conduct research projects, take field trips, and attend seminars and workshops related to science careers. The program provides housing, meals, travel costs and a stipend to interns. Learn more about this program at www.umes.edu/reu/

Summer Geoscience Bridge Program at UMES – (NSF Funded)

The Geosciences Bridge Program introduces high school seniors to ocean sciences, atmospheric sciences, and geographic information systems (GIS)/Remote Sensing techniques. The activities provided and experience on campus strengthen students’ knowledge of mathematics, teach them life skills that will prepare them for college life, and enhance their academic performance through advisement, social support, and tutorial services. This collaborative summer program is designed to recruit and train high school students, particularly from underrepresented groups, in various areas of the Geosciences field. Learn more about this program at www.umes.edu/cscgeosciences/

Summer Teacher Development Program at UMES (NSF Funded)

Teachers from Wicomico, Somerset, and Worcester counties (OR local teachers with daily transportation to UMES) are invited to participate in a paid, two-week on-campus Coastal Marine Sciences Workshop (CMARS) that will give them the tools to create lesson plans and educational and/or lab activities in environmental science.

Annual Meetings

Board of Visitors Meeting

NOAA EPP representatives and LMRCSC Technical Monitor and Technical Advisor participate in the annual BOV meeting where LMRCSC staff present accomplishments from previous year and the BOV representatives discuss and provide suggestions to help the Center improve its performance. The BOV facilitates inter-institutional course offerings by helping to execute the Articulation Agreement of LMRCSC.

Science Meeting

The LMRCSC conducts annual Science meetings involving LMRCSC scientists, as well as NOAA scientists, members of the External Advisory Committee and the Technical Advisory Board (TAB). The objectives of these meetings are to:  Identify NOAA Fisheries research priorities, establish partnerships, and discuss collaborative projects between and among LMRCSC scientists, and NOAA Fisheries Scientists, and develop strategies to secure external funding.

Regular Meetings

Executive Committee Meetings – monthly

The Executive Committee includes project directors from each partner institution and meets monthly to discuss Center administration and activities.

Education Committee Meeting

The Education Committee includes representatives from each of the Center partner institutions and works to coordinate schedules for course offerings, and LMRCSC seminar series, as well as develop and modify LMRCSC program curricula, and seek funding from various agencies to establish new center-wide education programs.

Research Committee

The committee meets twice a semester and is comprised of representatives from each of the Center partner institutions and is chaired by the LMRCSC DRS. This committee helps to foster research collaborations, develop center-wide research projects and lead Center efforts to develop proposals to seek funding for research from various agencies.

Technical Advisory Board (TAB) Meeting
