Nakia Coit is graduate of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. In summer 2017 she participated in the REU program at UMES, working with Dr. Pitula and graduate student Kristin Noelle. Her project focused on the protozoan parasite Perkinsus marinus and how it impacts oysters. Nakia graduated in spring 2019 and is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine at Tuskegee University. As a veterinarian, she will work with terrestrial and marine animals. She also plans to produce documentaries about the animals she works with and new discoveries. Nakia is from Baltimore, Maryland.
