Salina Parveen, left, a professor at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and UMES students Robyn Walker-Spencer, REU Undergrad Intern, Esam Almuhaideb, Doctorate Student, and Tahirah Johnson, Master's Student take Oyster samples during a recent outing. “More needs to be learned, though, about pathogens and microbiomes in oysters and seawater and how aquaculture practices, weather events and environmental factors influence them,” said Salina Parveen, a professor at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Parveen recently received a three-year, $600,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture as the project director for a multi-institutional study to address these concerns. They were collecting samples from the Somerset Surf Companies Aquaculture cages in the Tangier Sound near Crisfield MD.

Welcome to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center (LMRCSC)! It is the goal of the NOAA LMRCSC to prepare students from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented communities for successful careers in marine and fisheries science. 

The NOAA LMRCSC is funded by the NOAA Education Partnership Program with Minority-Serving Institutions (EPP/MSI). The University of Maryland Eastern Shore, in collaboration with its six partner universities, conducts research on marine and estuarine systems congruent with the interests of NOAA Fisheries.
