Job Summary
Student Assistants (SA) are individuals who possess enthusiasm, responsibility, and
the willingness to serve others. Student Assistants provide courteous and helpful
customer service to guests and the general campus community. Student Assistant staff
provides support to the Office of Residence Life operations throughout the semester
and will also collaborate on streamlining the process to prepare student living
spaces for August move-in and December check-out.
This position offers 20 hours/week during the semester from the week before
classes start through the end of finals. Weekend availability is required.

Compensation
Minimum Wage per hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in all staff meetings, training, and in-service meetings.
  • Complete various administrative duties
  • Answer phone calls and take messages
  • Provide excellent customer service while working with residents, both at the front
    desk and in day to-day interactions.
  • Be available to students during desk hours to answer questions and assist with any
    concerns they may have.
  • Know campus resources and refer students to appropriate University personnel as
    needed.
  • Completing work orders/maintenance requests
  • Be aware of attitudes and behavioral patterns of residents and report any
    concerning behavior to the Graduate Assistant and/or Area Director
  • Complete all required logs at the front desk.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with ORL and FERPA
    policies.
  • Be available to assist in covering desk hours on weekends and/or holidays
  • Participate in all staff meetings, training, and in-service meetings.
  • Other tasks as assigned

    Eligibility
    The SAs must be enrolled as full-time University of Maryland Eastern Shore students,
    but limit their coursework to a maximum of 18 credit hours (12 credit hours for graduate
    student SAs) and must successfully complete at least 12 undergraduate (or 9 graduate
    credits) each semester. The SAs may only take fewer than 12 undergraduate or 9
    graduate credit hours or more than 18 undergraduate or 12 graduate credit hours with
    prior written permission from the Director of the ORL or their designee.
    The SAs must maintain at least a semester and cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
    Failure to meet these GPA requirements may result in adverse employment action, up
    to and including termination. If at any time the SA’s semester or cumulative GPA falls
    below a 2 in either semester, the SA will be terminated.
    The ORL will check SA’s academic information each semester upon engagement and
    this information will be available to the Director, Associate Director, Assistant Directors,
    and Area Director/Graduate Assistant. SAs must understand the term ‘academic
    information’ is for this purpose defined as the term and cumulative grade point average,
    the number of term and cumulative credit hours taken and completed, and a list of
    courses enrolled in.
    Supervision
    A Graduate Assistant or Area Director directly supervises Student Assistants. They may
    also work closely with the administrative staff in the Office of Residence Life.
    Reassignment

Student Assistants are expected to understand they may be assigned or reassigned to
residence hall duties at the discretion of the Office of Residence Life.
