ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

Upward Bound, a federally funded pre-college program, serves low-income and first generation students in Wicomico and Somerset counties.  The goal of the program is to increase the percentage of low-income and first-generation high school students who pursue postsecondary education.  Upward Bound provides academic and personal support and guidance to help eligible high school students get into college.

UPWARD BOUND SUMMER PROGRAM

The Upward Bound summer program is a 6-week academic program that offers participants hands-on learning experiences that help bridge the gap from one school year to the next.  Students receive instruction in English, math, science and foreign language as well as participate in unique enrichment classes and cultural activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Have a minimum 2.5 GPA and a valid driver’s license (preferably)
  • Have the ability to work with diverse high school students who will be low-income and/or first generation college students
  • Ability to connect with and motivate high school students
  • Ability to work independently with minimal or no supervision
  • Basic skills in the use of MS Office and virtual platforms such as Zoom, Google Meets, Canvas, Microsoft Teams Meeting, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor and log daily student attendance and follow up with absent students
  • Attend all assigned UB classes and provide academic support and motivation as needed to help students succeed
  • Assist academic instructors as needed
  • Conduct occasional UB student teambuilding and leadership development activities
  • Share personal insights about the college experience with UB students 
  • Participate in and attend UB summer program events/activities
  • Chaperone UB students during program activities/events and on all trips (one-day and overnight).  All travel expenses covered.
  • Attend staff/team meetings
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned by program director and/or staff

PROGRAM CALENDAR AND WORK SCHEDULE

All scheduled work hours are at the UMES campus unless otherwise noted.  The general work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. but there may be some variations in the daily/weekly schedule depending on program activities and events.

  • June 20th & 21st Summer staff training
  • June 24th – August 2nd Upward Bound Summer Program
  • August 5th – August 9th Summer Program 2024 wrap-up/clean-up with summer staff

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  • Pick up and complete an employment application from the Upward Bound Program Office located in the SDC (Suite 2240).
  • Complete an online student application located on the Office of Human Resources website.

Both applications (Upward Bound Program and Human Resources) must be completed and submitted for consideration.   All applicants must submit an unofficial college transcript and two letters of reference to the Upward Bound Program Office.

SALARY

$15 – $18.00 per hour depending on experience and qualifications

**HOUSING WILL NOT BE PROVIDED BY THE UPWORD BOUND PROGRAM.  Student assistants must provide/secure their own       housing.

Please Note:  The Upward Bound summer program will be in person and not virtual.
