UMES 4-H Stem High School interns Bornil Das, Jash Patel and Rudra Patel, all from Delmar High School, work on an experiment investigating the radiative cooling properties of cellulose materials under the direction of professors Dr. Aaron Persad and Dr. Kausiksankar Das. The three are part of the first cohort of high school students participating in the STEM Research Internship Program hosted by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Extension 4-H STEM program. Applications are currently open for the second cohort of the program that begins in September. Students from Wicomico and Somerset county elementary schools visited the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Research, Extension and Teaching Farm in Princess Anne over five days in April as part of the UMES Extension 4-H STEM’s AgVenture Program. The program gave students hands-on STEM experiences at eight stations set out at the farm. Photos by Todd Dudek/UMES Ag Communications.
STEM Research Internship Program
Ten high school students from Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties in Maryland and Sussex County in Delaware have been chosen to participate in the inaugural UMES Extension 4-H STEM Research Internship Program from October 2025 to August 2026. They will meet at UMES on a weekly basis after school to tour research labs, meet faculty and learn about their research focus. They and a partner will be paired with a faculty mentor to develop their projects over the course of the academic year. Read full story. Photos by Ariel Clay/UMES Extension.

Summer Campers Get Taste of Aviation Science
Nearly 100 campers at Horizons Delmarva Summer Camp toured the maintenance facility at Salisbury airport during a field trip in July 2025, hosted by University of Maryland Eastern Shore Extension’s 4-H STEM Program. They also learned about the UMES aviation science program located at the airport.
