PRINCESS ANNE, MD – (May 31, 2019) – Dr. Salina Parveen, UMES professor of food science and technology, has been awarded the University System of Maryland (USM) Regent’s Faculty Award. She received the USM’s highest honor for her research, which is aimed at improving the safety and quality of seafood.

One of four researchers to be awarded for scholarship, research, or creative activity, Parveen was specifically recognized for developing, evaluating and validating rapid molecular immunological methods that aid in the detection of both food and waterborne pathogens like salmonella, vibrio and listeria. Her research findings have been adapted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Health Organization, the Food and Drug Administration and organizations in other countries to develop more accurate risk management practices.

Parveen’s work has yielded much, which includes 59 invited presentations; over 130 abstracts in scientific meetings from local, national and the international audiences; and 47 manuscripts in both nationally and internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals. In addition, she has published three book chapters and her work has generated over $13 million in external competitive funding which has been used to support masters and doctoral students under her guidance.
