REU Communications Workshop
REU Communications Workshop

The Living Marine Resources Cooperative Science Center (LMRCSC) held a 10-week summer program for undergraduate students that began on Monday, June 3, and ended on Friday, August 9.  The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), is an internship wherein undergraduate students from various universities around the country participate in laboratory and field research activities in the areas of marine and estuarine science.

In addition to field trips, students were provided instruction on topics like scientific ethics, library resources for research, experimental design, and data analysis.  They also attended seminars and workshops covering scientific writing and communication, in addition to attending fieldtrips that were in alignment with the information they learned in the classroom.  On the final day of the internship, students presented their research results to their peers and to faculty during a symposium held at the UMES Paul S. Sarbanes Coastal Ecology Center in Berlin, Md.

Students who successfully completed 10-week internship were provided housing, meals and a $5,750 stipend. The Program is administered by Dr. Paulinus Chigbu, professor and director of the NOAA LMRCSC, and Dr. Maggie Sexton, the program coordinator.  For additional information, visit www.umes.edu/reu.

*The Paul S. Sarbanes Coast Ecology Center has had some 800 guests (including walk-in tourists) and 20 students to visit for the year.
