History of Program

For more than 15 years, the Organizational Leadership Doctoral Program has provided students with the theoretical foundation and practical tools to make meaningful contributions to research, academics, government, the health care industry, non-profits, large and small corporations, and the global community.  

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) initiated the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Organizational Leadership in 2002.  The Ph.D. program in Organizational Leadership originally offered strands in Academics, Government Agencies, and Health and Human Services.  In 2007, the Organizational Leadership specialization replaced those strands and is still in place today.

Historical Highlights

  • Fall 2002 – Ph.D. program in Organizational Leadership began with academic strands in Academics, Government Agencies, and Health and Human Services
  • Fall 2005 – UMES graduated the first Ph.D. students in Organizational Leadership
  • Fall 2006 – UMES and the Organizational Leadership Doctoral Program become members of the International Leadership Association
  • Fall 2007 – Organizational Leadership specialization replaced original academic strands
  • Between 2007 and 2016 – 22 UMES Organizational Leadership Ph.D. students and professors presented at the renowned International Leadership Association Annual Conference
  • Spring 2016 – UMES received Carnegie Classification as a Doctoral Research University
  • Fall 2017 – Over 125 students have matriculated with their Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership from UMES
