Japan Study Abroad

UMES Department of Kinesiology Launches Its First Japan Study Abroad Program

Twenty-six University of Maryland Eastern Shore undergraduate students made history in 2026 by participating in the university’s inaugural study abroad experience in Japan, a first-of-its-kind opportunity blending kinesiology, hospitality, and immersive cultural learning. Centered in Tokyo, the program provided students with hands-on experiences that connected health, movement, sport, wellness, and global hospitality practices. Highlights included participating in a traditional martial arts class, visiting Japan’s iconic Olympic National Stadium to explore the legacy of international sport and event management, attending a traditional Kabuki dance performance, and engaging in interactive culinary experiences through a sushi-making class and traditional green tea ceremony.

Students immersed themselves in Japanese culture through experiences that showcased both tradition and innovation. Students visited the historic Meiji Shrine, explored the vibrant neighborhoods of Harajuku and the world-famous Shibuya Crossing, developed creative skills during an anime drawing workshop, and experienced the immersive digital art exhibits at TeamLabs. The program created opportunities for students to expand their global perspectives while gaining insight into the intersections of sport, hospitality, culture, and wellness.
