English Proficiency Examination (EPE)

ENGL 001: EPE is Being Eliminated Effective Immediately

An external, stand-alone writing assessment is no longer required by the University System of Maryland. Therefore, effective immediately (April 5, 2021), we are replacing the English Proficiency Exam, ENGL 001: EPE, with a process-based writing assessment that is integrated within the English 102: Principles of Composition II course: the researched argumentation essay.  We consider the integrated assessment both more valid and reliable since it assesses writing the way we teach it: as a process.  UMES students will no longer take the EPE.

Since this change has just been approved, the Registrar’s Office is working out some practical details.

  • 1.The co-requisite of ENGL 001 for ENGL 102 and the pre-requisite of ENGL 001 for ENGL 203 and 305 are being removed in HawkWeb.  If you are currently registered for ENGL 001: EPE, you can pre-register for ENGL 203 and/or 305 for Summer 2021 and/or Fall 2021.  You will be administratively withdrawn from the EPE when this is resolved.
  • 2.ENGL 001 will be removed from the degree audit.
