In an effort to enhance community building, the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program joined forces with ACTION Anime to host another successful STEM Thursday Game Night on October 24.
The goal of STEM Thursday is to introduce and improve unity across the campus. Successful team building events are geared towards bringing students and staff closer together and in turn leads to a more comfortable and cohesive campus environment. This ties in with the ongoing effort of the LSAMP Program to enable students to have access to mentoring, professional development workshops, community outreach activities, and research opportunities. At the most recent Game Night students were engaged in a relay race that required team effort as well as a Kahoots quiz game, where students were required to answer questions ranging from subjects in mathematics, biology, and chemistry to American history.
The LSAMP Program was initiated in 1991 and is named after former Ohio congressman Louis Stokes. The UMES program, which is in collaboration with UMBC and UMCP, is designed to increase substantially the quantity and quality of minority students receiving baccalaureate degrees in STEM disciplines and, subsequently, to increase the number of minority students entering graduate school who obtain doctoral degrees in STEM fields.
