PRINCESS ANNE, MD – (August 29, 2018) – The community is invited to participate in various production, harvesting and cooking demonstrations involving several crops growing on the UMES Education and Demonstration Farm on Saturday, September 22, beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at noon. The farm is located on Stewart Neck Road, and the event is free and open to the public.
Growing Jamaican Callaloo and Scotch Bonnet Peppers is the focus of the event, as participants will be led to explore the production, harvesting and marketing of the two. While both are indigenous to Jamaica, several researchers at UMES have successfully produced the crops in Eastern Shore soils and have taken them to market. In addition to being chocked full of health benefits, they are easy to grow and are sure to add to the bottom line for small farmers. Informational sessions and hands-on demonstrations, that explain the process from seed to market, will be held along with taste testing opportunities.
