University of Maryland Eastern Shore President Heidi M. Anderson

By Heidi M. Anderson

Teaching, research and outreach remain the bedrock of our 1890 land-grant mission. Even in turbulent times, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore stands firm in its commitment to serve the Eastern Shore, Maryland and our national partners with excellence and purpose.

Despite challenging financial landscapes and shifting federal priorities, UMES continues to take a forward-looking, strategic approach to ensure stability and growth. This fall, we celebrated our fifth consecutive year of enrollment gains — a powerful testament to the exceptional teaching, innovative programs and high-impact research that define our campus community.

We are especially excited about the forthcoming Agricultural Research & Education Center, a transformative investment that will strengthen the School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences and expand our capacity to support Maryland’s agricultural communities. This new center will accelerate discovery, enhance experiential learning and promote research innovations that directly benefit growers, producers and families across the region.

At the same time, UMES continues to advance a landmark initiative: the establishment of the first School of Veterinary Medicine in the state of Maryland. We are preparing to host the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Council on Education for a comprehensive site visit in June 2026 — an important milestone on our pathway toward accreditation and the development of a diverse, highly trained veterinary workforce for Maryland and beyond.

None of this progress would be possible without the steadfast support of our many partners. We extend our profound appreciation to the Maryland General Assembly and to our federal partners — including the USDA, NOAA and NSF — as well as the private entities and stakeholders who champion our mission.

UMES takes pride in accelerating student success, advancing research and deepening our community impact. With so many good things happening at UMES, I hope you find the stories in this issue of Ingenuity both inspiring and worth sharing.

Heidi M. Anderson, Ph.D. is the president of University of Maryland Eastern Shore
