PRINCESS ANNE, MD-(August 10, 2021)-Local growers and gardening enthusiasts can learn about pears at an on-site workshop August 14, sponsored by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Extension’s Horticulture and Fruit program.  The free event begins at 10 a.m. and features information, and best of all tasting, on 12 varieties grown on UMES’ orchard, including the easy-to-grow and newly popular Asian pear.

Dr. Naveen Kumar Dixit, an assistant professor of horticulture and Extension specialist at UMES, planted the orchard in 2018 for research on which varieties of different fruits grow best in local soils and conditions and how to cultivate them.  Information gained from research is passed along to growers and other stakeholders through extension activities, such as online and in-person workshops.
