PRINCESS ANNE, MD- (December 5, 2019)- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Extension is hosting a free Cover Crop Workshop Tuesday, December 10 featuring Steve Groff, a cover crop coach.
The 3-6 p.m. workshop will be held in UMES’ Richard A. Henson Center, room 1116. Groff will describe the process of “treating your cover crops like your cash crops” as he goes through the elements of his “10 percent cover crop challenge,” a step by step cover crop management plan and a cover crop decision guide. Three nutrient management credits, two soil and water CCA credits and one sustainability CCA credits will be awarded at completion of the workshop.
According to Berran Rogers, coordinator, Small Farm Program, UMES Cooperative Extension, Groff is touted as, “the trusted voice of cover crop innovation and education for over 25 years.” He designed the first cover crop Roller-Crimper in North America, developed the Tillage Radish, started the first company exclusively selling cover crop seed and had the first commercial vegetable farm to no-till transplant tomatoes. Groff has consulted for Cornell and Penn State universities, the University of Maryland, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and other companies and institutions.
In addition to working with educators in the field, his interests also include helping farmers with their crops, agronomists with their training and seed companies with new mix formulation.
