UMES Extension beekeeper Stephen Goewey will lead a hands-on workshop May 9 to teach the basics of hive inspections. “What to Expect When You’re Inspecting: Performing Your First Hive Inspection” will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the apiary at UMES’ Research, Extension and Teaching Farm.
“I’ll cover everything you need to know to help you feel confident opening and inspecting a beehive,” Goewey said.
Participants will learn how to identify the queen bee, assess brood patterns and recognize healthy versus concerning signs in the hives and colony. Goewey will impart tips to help beginning or improving beekeepers develop a systematic inspection routine to ensure bee safety.
The cost is $20 per person with lunch included. Pre-registration is required here.
