Summer blooms are on vibrant display at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Herb Garden. Herb specialist Henriette den Ouden (far left) is offering a free guided walk through the garden Saturday, July 26, to learn about medicinal herbs.
Participants will experience the herbs by seeing, smelling and tasting them, she said. The visit also includes a classroom session on the basics of growing, harvesting and processing the plants, as well as challenges and the types of products that can be made with medicinal herbs.

The hands-on experience is open to beginners, garden enthusiasts and small farmers. It takes place from 9-11:30 a.m. at the UMES Research, Extension and Teaching Farm just south of campus. The event is free, but pre-registration is required for each participant by visiting www.umes.edu/extension/events.
“The goal is to introduce potential local growers to herbs and the value-added products that can be produced,” said den Ouden, a UMES Extension agent associate. “At the end of the program, participants should have an idea if herb growing is right for them.”
