Student Aid Index (SAI)

To calculate SAI, a need-based analysis is conducted by the federal processor at the time of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) submission. The analysis takes into account the income and assets of the student and their parents or spouse, if applicable. The analysis formula used considers both taxed and untaxed income, and assets and benefits received, such as unemployment or Social Security.

SAI is an eligibility index number that the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) uses to determine how much federal student aid a student will receive. The Federal Student Aid Estimator estimates financial aid eligibility, based on the SAI.
