I. Introduction
Purpose of the Webpage: to inform prospective students about UMES’ fully remote degree programs
II. Definitions
Virtual Campus (VIRT)
Description: A virtual campus is a designation that simulates the experience of a physical campus, providing students with access to educational resources, courses, and community interactions in a digital environment. Only approved academic degrees can be classified as a virtual program.
Virtual Programs
Description: Degree programs that are entirely online, typically structured in a way that allows students to complete all coursework remotely asynchronous (on-demand), with a set duration per course of 8-weeks ONLY. Courses may occasionally be offered synchronously with permission in exceptional circumstances.
Virtual Student
Description: A fully virtual student is an individual who engages in educational programs entirely through online platforms without attending traditional in-person classes. This type of student participates in learning activities, such as lectures, discussions, assignments, and assessments, exclusively via digital means.
Online Course
Description: Courses offered via the internet, which may include a mix of synchronous (live) and asynchronous (on-demand) components. The duration of the course may be 8 week or 15-week terms.
Hybrid Course
Description: A hybrid course, also known as a blended course, is an educational format that combines traditional face-to-face instruction with online learning components. This approach allows for a flexible learning environment where students engage with both in-person and digital resources.
III. Overview of Virtual Programs
Virtual programs enable students from diverse geographical, economic, and social backgrounds to pursue higher education. This accessibility helps to reduce barriers that traditionally hindered access, such as distance from institutions or financial constraints.
Benefits of fully remote degree programs:
- Flexibility
- Accessibility
- Opportunity for a diverse learning environment
- Cost-Effectiveness
- Diverse Learning Opportunities
- Global Networking
- Self-Directed Learning
IV. Course Structure
Students can progress through coursework at their own speed, allowing them to spend more time on challenging topics while advancing quickly through material they grasp easily. This self-directed approach fosters independence and motivation.
Explanation of the 8-week course format:
- Duration: Each course lasts for eight weeks, which is half the length of a traditional semester course. This condensed format allows for a more focused and intensive learning experience.
- Weekly Modules: The course is divided into weekly modules or units, each covering specific topics and learning objectives. Students are expected to engage with new material every week.
- Assignments and Assessments: Students typically have assignments due weekly, which may include readings, discussions, quizzes, and projects. Assessments are designed to evaluate understanding and application of the material.
- Instructor Interaction: Instructors often provide regular feedback and engage in discussions with students through forums, emails, or live sessions, ensuring that students receive support throughout the course.
- Peer Collaboration: Many courses incorporate group projects or discussions to encourage collaboration among students, fostering a sense of community and enhancing learning through shared perspectives.
- Flexible Learning: The online nature of the format allows students to access materials and complete assignments at their convenience within the week, accommodating different schedules and commitments.
