Financial Aid

General Questions

Financial Aid questions for pharmacy students should be addressed to Kiana Smith (email: kcsmith1@umes.edu) in the Office of Financial Aid

FAFSA

Please complete the Free Application for Federal Student aid (FAFSA) at https://www.fafsa.gov and ensure that you have listed UMES as one of the schools to receive your information (school code = 002106).    You must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen to complete the FAFSA. Students on F1 or J1 visas are not eligible for Federal Student Aid.

FSA ID

The U.S. Department of Education now requires that all students to create their own Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID and password.  The FSA ID replaces the U.S. Department of Education 4-Digit PIN that you may have used in the past to complete your FAFSA.

FEDERAL STUDENT LOAN OPTIONS

Federal Direct Stafford Loans

Doctor of Pharmacy students may receive a maximum of $37,167 annually in a Federal Direct Stafford Unsubsidized Loan.   The remainder of your financial aid eligibility may be through a Federal Direct PLUS (which requires a credit approval from the U.S. Department of Education) or a private/alternative educational loan (i.e. Citi Assist, Discover, Sallie Mae, etc.).  For your convenience, lenders that have provided alternative loans to UMES students within the past three years can be found online by utilizing ELM Select (http://beta.elmselect.com/link/query?schoolid=16).

Graduate PLUS Loan

Applications for the Graduate PLUS can be completed at https://www.studentaid.gov.  The student may borrow up to the cost of attendance for a full time student less any other financial assistance received. This loan is meant to cover the portion of the cost of attendance that is not covered by the graduate unsubsidized loan. Repayment is the responsibility of the student and the student may choose to go into repayment while they are still enrolled in college, or they can request that payment be deferred until they have completed their education (or cease to be enrolled). During enrollment and the “deferment” time, interest will continue to accrue.
