Graduate Assistant Positions

Graduate Assistant Positions – Department of Education

Annually Fall – Spring

Graduate assistant positions through the Department of Education are either full-time (20 hours per week) or part-time (10 hours per week).  Each comes with a stipend and tuition benefits.  The full time positions provide tuition for 10 credits per semester including benefits and the part-time positions provide tuition for 5 credits per semester.

What are the responsibilities of a graduate assistant?

Graduate assistants do a variety of activities.  These include:  assisting faculty in class preparation and research (e.g., proctoring exams, duplicating materials, assisting with technology, conducting database searches); collecting and analyzing data from assessments; assisting the administrative assistants in clerical tasks; monitoring the computer lab; managing and updating the departmental website.  This year we anticipate one full-time position that will be solely working with a course redesign project for the introductory undergraduate course in Psychology (PSYC 200).  Applicants should specify if they are interested in the psychology graduate assistant position.

What skills do I need?

Graduate assistants in the Department of Education represent aspiring professionals.  We expect them to have a high level of professionalism (e.g., dependability, punctuality, professional dress and demeanor, strong oral and written communication skills); respect and experience in working with diverse individuals; willingness to help other students; clerical and technology skills (e.g., filing, word processing; use of database, web design, interactive whiteboards); spirit of cooperation and teamwork; confidentiality; and initiative.  In addition, completion of a psychology course, such as introduction to psychology, and teaching skills are preferred for the redesign project.

Who can apply?

Regularly admitted graduate students in the majors that are housed in the Department of Education (i.e., provisional status is not considered regular status).  These include Counselor Education (both specializations – School and Community), Master of Arts in Teaching, and Special Education.  In addition, anyone who was a graduate assistant in the Department during 2010-2011 is eligible.

When is the deadline?
