In addition to the University’s Professional Development programs there are a number of opportunities available outside of UMES for students to experience in their desired field. Below you will find links with information about these various opportunities.
Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship
The Dell Thurmond Woodard Fellowship, which includes one $5,000 grant for one student each year, is part of the Tisdale Fellowship program, a summer internship available to undergraduate and graduate students. Any student, undergraduate or graduate, who is interested in diversity and ethics issues, and in learning about high-tech public policy issues, can apply for this Fellowship.
The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is an independent, nonprofit organization serving hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States and other countries by providing selected students challenging opportunities to work and learn in Washington, D.C. for academic credit. The largest program of its kind, The Washington Center has 70 full-time staff and over 40,000 alumni, many of whom are in leadership positions in the public, private and nonprofit sectors in the United States and around the world.
Internships in the United States Congress in Washington DC are an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the national political process. Internships in Congress are unpaid; but UMES has funding to provide a stipend for UMES students who secure a position as an intern with a Senator or Congressman. CIA Now Offering SCHOLARSHIPS for GRADUATE-LEVEL STUDENT
The CIA is now accepting applications for student opportunities–UNDERGRADUATE and GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS and PAID INTERNSHIPS!!!!!!!!!
In addition to scholarships for undergraduate school, CIA is now offering scholarships for advanced degree students—graduate and doctoral. Please share this good news with your students. Feel free to post the following information to your website, forward by email, spread by word of mouth, etc.
Full-time students who are US citizens (by birth or naturalization) and who are at least 18 years old are eligible to apply for our scholarships and paid internships. Students from all fields of study, who are attending or planning to attend an accredited university or college, will be considered.
Languages are not required for most positions, but we have a STRONG NEED FOR THE FOLLOWING CRITICAL LANGUAGES: Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Indonesian, Korean, Kurdish, Pashto (Pukhto), Persian (Farsi), Russian, Somali, Turkish, Urdu.
GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP (STOKES) PROGRAM (Includes Annual Salary, Tuition Assistance, and Employee Benefits)
- BENEFITS: Up to $18,000 per year for tuition, books, and mandatory fees. PLUS Annual salary. PLUS employee benefits (medical insurance, retirement plan, life insurance, etc)
- ACADEMIC CRITERIA: Full-time Graduate and Doctoral level students taking at least 9 credit hours per semester. Minimum GPA is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- FINANCIAL CRITERIA: DEPENDENT STUDENTS–If listed as a dependent for at least 5 months of previous tax year, the maximum annual income for a family of 4 or less is $70,000 and for a family of 5 or more the maximum annual income is $80,000. INDEPENDENT STUDENTS–Household income of $35,000 or less.
- AVAILABILITY FOR EMPLOYMENT: Scholars must be available to work 60 to 90 days in the Washington, D.C., area each year of sponsorship. Additionally, scholars must have at least one year of full-time courses remaining after the 60 to 90-day employment period.
- SERVICE OBLIGATION: Because we are making an investment in the student, accepting an offer means that upon graduation scholars are required to work for the CIA for 1.5 years for every year of sponsorship.

UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP (STOKES) PROGRAM (Includes Annual Salary, Tuition Assistance, and Employee Benefits)

- ACADEMIC CRITERIA: High school seniors, college freshmen, and college sophomores who have and maintain a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale GPA are eligible. High school students must also have an ACT score of at least 21 or a combined SAT score of at least 1500 (1000 math and critical thinking and 500 written).
- FINANCIAL CRITERIA: Maximum annual income for a family of 4 or less is $70,000 and for a family of 5 or more the maximum annual income is $80,000.
- AVAILABILITY FOR EMPLOYMENT: Scholars must be available to work 60 to 90 days in the Washington, D.C., area each year of sponsorship.
- SERVICE OBLIGATION: Because we are making an investment in the student, accepting an offer means that upon graduation scholars are required to work for the CIA for 1.5 years for every year of sponsorship.
- APPLICATION DEADLINE: For high school seniors, 15 October of senior year. Additionally, high school applicants must be age 18 by April 1st of their senior year. For college applicants, applications are accepted year round and should be submitted at least 12 months before applicant’s desired start date.

PAID INTERNSHIPS
CIA also offers paid internships to full-time undergraduate and graduate students (including doctoral candidates).
- SERVICE OBLIGATION is required. This is the opportunity for students to do something extraordinary using their educational backgrounds, work experiences and skill sets to contribute to the unique mission of the Agency.

Baltimore City Mayoral Fellowship
During a 10 week full-time placement in a Mayoral office or agency, Fellows will be assigned to projects that focus on a myriad of public policy issues and challenges. Mayoral Fellows are placed in agencies based on their background, interests and the needs of the agencies and departments. Fellows will complete their projects under the direction of senior level government officials and will be provided with immediate and direct feedback. At the conclusion of the summer, Fellows will give presentations to the Mayor and various cabinet officials summarizing their placements and overall summer experience. The ultimate goal of the fellowship is to encourage talented individuals, with an interest in public service, to seek permanent positions within City government at the conclusion of their academic program. Study Abroad in Spain with the Gilman International Scholarship, which sponsors U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad.
