Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown understands the importance of military service and the role service members play in the safety and security of America.
The former Maryland Lieutenant Governor and retired Army Colonel emphasized that sentiment during his keynote speech at this year’s “Salute to Veterans” Gala held at the Richard A. Henson Center on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
“That’s why we’re here … to recognize their role in defending, protecting, and preserving the nation that we love,” he said. “We’re trying to repay an unpayable debt. We can never truly repay what our veterans have given us.”
The annual event, held on Nov. 13, was co-sponsored by UMES and the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce and raised funds for the Silver Star Scholarship Fund. The scholarship supports first-year UMES students who are honorably discharged veterans, a child of a veteran, or a child of a service member killed in action.
Emceeing the event was Maryland Secretary of Housing and former Salisbury, Maryland, Mayor Jake Day, who is active in the Army National Guard. Day commended Brown’s resume of public and military service and how it translates for fellow Marylanders.
“Your passion for this state and for your country truly shines through,” Day said.
As Brown closed his speech, he reiterated the importance of keeping the promise to give back and care for veterans and their families.
“We must ensure, not just with words, but with action, that no veteran is left behind,” he said. “That’s a responsibility for all of us in our communities, our workplaces, our daily lives, and as a solemn obligation we owe to all who serve. It’s an obligation that extends beyond their years in uniform, but for the decades that follow.”
