The University of Maryland Eastern Shore School of Veterinary Medicine (UMES SVM) is preparing for a significant milestone in its development as the first veterinary school in the state of Maryland. From June 21–26, 2026, the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA COE) will conduct its comprehensive accreditation site visit, a critical step toward full accreditation.

The comprehensive visit evaluates all aspects of a veterinary program across the AVMA COE’s eleven Standards of Accreditation, including finances, curriculum, clinical resources, facilities, faculty support, research, student outcomes, and organizational effectiveness.

“This upcoming site visit reflects the tremendous effort and dedication shown by our faculty, staff, students, and supporters across Maryland and beyond,” said Dr. Stanley Robertson, Dean of the UMES School of Veterinary Medicine. “We are eager to welcome the AVMA COE team to campus and demonstrate the innovation, planning, and commitment behind building Maryland’s first veterinary school.”

During the week-long visit, the accreditation team will:

  • Tour UMES SVM academic and teaching facilities
  • Review clinical training partnerships and resources
  • Meet with faculty, staff, students, university leadership, and stakeholders
  • Evaluate curriculum design and assessment strategies
  • Review documentation outlining compliance with accreditation standards
  • Assess student support services, research activity, and outcome-focused processes

UMES SVM continues to engage the university community, alumni, regional partners, and Maryland’s agricultural and animal-health sectors in preparing for the visit. Additional informational sessions and updates will be provided throughout the coming year to keep stakeholders informed and involved.

As Maryland’s first veterinary school, UMES SVM is committed to expanding access to veterinary education, strengthening the regional animal-health workforce, and contributing to One Health initiatives throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
