Grounds provides landscape maintenance and support for over 250 acres of the 750 acre UMES campus.  Landscape services include mowing and weed control, shrub and flower bed maintenance, planting 10,000 bulbs and 10,000 annuals yearly, irrigation, and pest control.  Maintenance services include solid waste disposal, masonry, lawnmower and heavy equipment repair, parking lot maintenance, and sidewalk maintenance.  Grounds also provides services that support the campus recycling program.

“Being Green”

Grounds has incorporated work practices to conserve resources and sustain our environment:

  • Less mulch use around trees; recycling existing mulch
  • Using “Gator” bags around newly planted trees and shrubs
  • Using a drip emitter system to water individual plants in flower beds (requires as little as 1/2 gallon of water per hour for each plant)
  • Four underground irrigation systems with rain sensors will operate based on the amount of moisture in the ground

Grounds is staffed with ten full-time employees and two part-time employees. The campus is serviced in sections by groundskeeping crews; each crews consists of a Groundskeeper Lead and two groundskeepers.
