Experiential Education
The UMES School of Pharmacy’s Office of Experiential Education (OEE) adopted a mission to prepare student pharmacists to become exemplary pharmacists for contemporary practice through high quality, rigorous, and progressive introductory and advanced experiences with well-prepared preceptors who promote health and provide patient care as vital members of America’s health care teams.
As students matriculate through the first two years of the didactic curriculum, they will also participate in the hands-on, patient care introductory pharmacy practice experience (IPPE) beginning in the first semester of the pharmacy program and continues through the third year as the yearlong Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE). Students will have increasing levels of trust in their rotation activities as a student pharmacist; moving from novice to competent student pharmacist by the end of their PharmD program.
UMES offers hundreds of experiential opportunities. In addition to Maryland and the neighboring states of Delaware and Virginia; there are both national and international rotation opportunities from which to choose. The Office of Experiential Education will work to tailor your rotation experiences with your future pharmacy career areas of interest.
Experiential Education Curriculum:

First Professional Year (SP1)
- Completion of 3 weeks introductory community pharmacy practice rotation
- Completion of 3 weeks introductory institutional pharmacy practice rotation
- Introduction to Interprofessional Education
Second Professional Year (SP2)
- Completion of 2 weeks direct patient care rotation
- Provide direct patient care for an extended time to patients in long-term care facilities
- Simulated and live interprofessional activities and multi-disciplines
Third Professional Year (SP3)
- Completion of eight (8), five-week rotations to include:
– 1 – Advanced Community
– 1 – Advanced Institutional
– 1 – Acute Care
– 1 – Ambulatory Care
– 4 – Elective Rotations

The OEE is committed to the continual recruitment, development, and engagement of preceptors. Experiential Education accounts for 1/3 of the total professional pharmacy education program and thus we rely on the expertise and commitment of our practicing colleagues to ensure our students can successfully apply didactic knowledge at the practice site.
