Bio

Dr. Gladwell is a native of the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from UMES and his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy (UMSOP). After graduation from UMSOP, Dr. Gladwell completed a PGY-1 residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital followed by a PGY-2 residency in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at UMSOP. Prior to his current appointment, he served as a full-time faculty member at several different schools of pharmacy including Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Husson University in Bangor, Maine.  He was also a member of the faculty at the UMES School of Pharmacy during its inaugural years from 2010-2011, and he was involved in developing many of the current courses within the program.  

As a registered pharmacist for over 20 years, Dr. Gladwell has practiced in a variety of settings.  He has served as a clinical specialist in Cardiology Critical Care in a large teaching hospital, he has worked as a pharmacy manager in several chain pharmacies on Delmarva, and he has developed pharmacist-run ambulatory clinics with collaborative practice agreements in a federally-qualified health center in Maine.  He is currently board certified in both Pharmacotherapy (BCPS) and Ambulatory Care (BCACP) by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties, and is a certified immunization trainer through the American Pharmacists Association (APhA).  Dr. Gladwell is a member of several pharmacy organizations including the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), and he serves as the UMES faculty liaison to ACCP. His research interests include assessments of educational initiatives in a pharmacy curriculum as well as investigations of pharmacy practice models and the appropriate use of medications to improve the outcomes of patients with chronic diseases.  

Dr. Gladwell has been recognized with multiple awards for his commitment to education and the practice of pharmacy, including the UMES School of Pharmacy and Health Professions Dean’s Award in 2017, the UMES School of Pharmacy SP-2 Faculty of the Year Award in 2016, the Husson University School of Pharmacy P4 Teacher of the Year Award in 2015, the Husson University School of Pharmacy P3 Teacher of the Year Award in 2014, the inaugural Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy Excellence in Online Teaching Faculty Award in 2002, and the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy Smithkline Beecham Pharmaceuticals Award for Superior Achievement in Patient Care Award in 1998.

During his off time, he enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with his wife, Nancy Edgeworth, who is also a pharmacist.
