BIO

Dr. Marie-Therese Oyalowo is an Associate Professor and Drug Information Director, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administration, School of Pharmacy (SOP) and Health Professions at University of Maryland, Eastern Shore (UMES). She serves as the coordinator and provides lectures for the Hematology/ Oncology and Therapeutics of Self Care & Over The Counter courses. She also teaches several courses as a team faculty member, among other responsibilities. She serves as the chair of the Professional Development Committee and member of the following committees: Student Academic Progression, Awards and Scholarship, Sunshine and several search committees. She is currently serving as the parliamentarian for the Faculty Council and the SOP faculty representative in the University wide Faculty Assembly.

Dr. Oyalowo has extensive professional practice experience including leadership responsibilities. Areas of pharmacy practice include Drug Information, General Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Critical Care, Cardiology, Oncology, Transplantation, Geriatric Medicine, Pediatrics and Community Pharmacy Practice. Leadership roles included President/Owner, Comcare Pharmacy, Bowie, MD;  Director, Drug Information Services, Howard University Hospital, Washington, DC; Senior Clinical Pharmacist/Team Leader, Washington Hospital Center, Washington DC; Secretary, Board of Directors, CARE Pharmacies, Linthicum, MD; and Assistant Manager, Revco Drugs, Atlanta, GA.  Her previous academic experience was at Howard University College of Pharmacy (1989-96) where she served as coordinator of the Drug Information Course and provided lectures in the following team-taught courses: Clinical Pharmacy & Therapeutics, Therapeutics and Patient Care, Health Care Ethics, OTC/Drug Interactions, Socio-pharmacy and Contemporary Pharmacy Practice. At the hospital, she also served as: a preceptor to pharmacy students, co-chair of Adverse Drug Reactions Committee, coordinator of Drug Use Evaluation program, active member of Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee and editor of the Drug Information Newsletter and Pharmagram. Her research activities which included IRB Approved studiesranged from evaluating drug usage patterns, therapy outcome of selected nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, adverse effects of selected drugs, to stability and compatibility studies. Dr. Oyalowo has also provided presentations on over 50 pharmacy and patient care related topics and published several research articles. Additionally, she is a Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist (BCOP). Prior to joining the pharmacy profession, she practiced in Healthcare as a Registered Nurse. She is a member of several national and local professional organizations including American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), American College of Clinical Pharmacists (ACCP), American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP), National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA), Maryland Pharmacists Association (MPhA) and Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce (GBCC). She was recently appointed to serve in the HOPA BCOP Field Testing Work Group Committee. She has also served as a legislative advocate, as a practitioner and a leader for pharmacy students both at a local and national level, meeting with Delegates, Senators and Representatives to discuss critical issues in Pharmacy Practice. Dr. Oyalowo has also been very active in her community at various capacities. These include motivating young individuals to consider a career in pharmacy via Career Fairs in Elementary, Middle and High schools; organizing and conducting annual educational programs, sponsoring youth programs, serving as “team mom” and treasurer for team sports, and member of Finance Committee as well as teaching Religious Education. She continues to serve as an Advisory Board member to Elizabeth Seton High School, Pharmacy Technician Program which was recently instituted in Bladensburg, MD. Dr. Oyalowo has also received several honors and awards including Small Business of the Year, from GBCC, with citations from the city, county and state; Pharmacist of the Year, Chairman’s Award, Excellence in Practice, Faculty of the Year Award, Rho Chi Pharmaceutical Honor Society and Sigma Zeta National Science Honor Society. Dr. Oyalowo and her husband, Tunde Oyalowo are parents to four children (3 sons, 1 daughter). At her leisure time, she enjoys cooking, sewing, reading, jogging and volunteering her services where needed. 

Areas of Interest and/or Experience

Specific areas of interest include hematology/oncology practice with emphasis on therapeutic management of various cancers including supportive care. She has specific interest in cancer prevention and survivorship and has recently provided presentations to the community on these topics. She enjoys sharing her professional experience with the students, and motivating them towards their professional goals.  She also serves as a preceptor to pharmacy students and residents.
