PROFICIENCY TESTING
The ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) is a standardized procedure for assessment of functional speaking ability. It is a prestigious, nationally recognized assessment used by many Fortune 500 companies, U.S. government agencies and academic institutions. The OPI is administered by phone in a live interview format and proctored by the Foreign Language instructional Center. (A fee is paid directly to ACTFL.) Individuals are then rated based on ACTFL criteria in one of ten levels of speaking ability. Learn more at About Proficiency Testing. HAITIAN CREOLE FOR MEDICAL MISSIONS
This one-day class is taught by a native-speaking instructor. Intended for individuals traveling to Haiti for medical/volunteer work, or for medical professionals interested in learning more about Haitian culture and society. Participants will learn and become familiar with basic Haitian Creole terminology and gain insights into Haitian culture. All materials are provided.

FORM YOUR OWN LANGUAGE CLASS
Have you always wanted to learn a language? This is your chance! Our native-speaking instructor will lead your group in basic proficiency. This is ideal for the learner with personal enrichment, business or travel in mind. All materials are included for this course which is taught in a state-of-the-art language learning classroom on the campus of UMES. Form your own group of friends, family or colleagues. This one-day non-credit class enables persons who are working or preparing for a career in the healthcare field to develop vocabulary, phrases and cultural insights that are useful in everyday situations. Class is taught by a native-speaking instructor in the Foreign Language Instructional Center, a state-of-the-art classroom featuring technology designed for foreign language instruction. All materials are provided. The class fee is for both days; there are no refunds for persons who elect to attend only one day.
