Citation Tools & Guides

Style Manuals and Online Citation Tool:

When writing a research paper, you must cite any author whose work you used in your paper. This requires both an in-text citation within the body of the paper for any quoted, paraphrased, or summarized material and a corresponding entry on the references list at the end of the paper. Citation standards are set by the professional association in the field of study for which you are doing research. Below are links to the most commonly used style manuals at UMES.

Besides using these quick guides, we recommend using RefWorks, an online citation management tool, that allows you to import citations from databases and websites, organize them into folders and create bibliographies automatically. To create an account in RefWorks, contact the Reference Desk at (410) 651-7937 for the Group Code.
