Training Guide

This guide is intended to assist supervisors with the identification of environmental, health, and safety training requirements for  personnel under their supervision in their colleges or departments.  The following addresses common regulatory training requirements.  Specific training is based on the particular responsibilities of a position, and is typically necessary within the department.  Contact EHS for assistance in identifying specific training requirements.

Annual Asbestos Awareness

Applies to employees who are potentially exposed to asbestos as incidental to their jobs. The primary target audience is housekeepers and maintenance personnel.

Annual Bloodborne Pathogens Training 

Required for all University personnel who have occupational exposure to human blood or other potentially infectious materials.  The target audience is laboratory research staff, maintenance and operations staff , health center, athletics, police officers, and health and safety officers.

Chemical Hygiene

All personnel who work with chemicals in laboratories are required to have Chemical Hygiene Training.

Confined Spaces

Employees who work in areas with limited access (e.g., utility vaults (manholes), crawlspaces, air handlers, etc.) are required to receive Confined Spaces Safety Training.

Electrical Systems

Employees working with electrical systems over 50 volts are required by OSHA to have training that includes the shock hazard, arc flash hazard, restriction zones, protective clothing, testing criteria, insulated tools, and permits for work with energized systems.

Fall Protection

Employees who work at heights greater than 6 feet are required to have Fall Prevention Training.

Fire Safety & Emergency Evacuation

This training is required for all UMES personnel.  It provides information on UMES Fire Safety and Evacuation Procedures and general fire prevention. This training supplements but is not intended to replace specific training provided for campus residents, laboratory personnel, building fire wardens, public assembly personnel, Health Center personnel, or police officers.

Forklift / Industrial Powered Truck

Any employee required or expected to operate forklift trucks and/or other powered industrial trucks, must be trained and certified. Both formal classroom and practical training is required.  Certain maintenance personnel and storekeepers are the primary target audience.

Hazard Communication

All University employees who work with hazardous chemicals or materials in a non-laboratory environment, are required to receive Hazard Communication Training annually.

Hazardous Waste Generator

Hazardous Waste Management Training is for those personnel who generate and handle hazardous waste.

Hearing Conservation

Required annually for those employees who have an 8-hour Time Weighted Average occupational exposure to noise at or above 85 decibels.

Laboratory Safety

Training includes information on applicable regulations and guidelines, recommended work practices, selection of personal protective equipment, and proper disposal of hazardous chemicals and biological waste.

Lead Awareness

All employees with potential exposure to lead, lead-based paint (LBP), and alloys containing lead, such as solder, are required to attend annual Lead Awareness Training. The target audience for this training is maintenance and housekeeping personnel.

Lockout / Tagout Training

Employees who are required to conduct maintenance on equipment with stored energy are required to receive training in Lockout/Tagout procedures.

Office Safety

This training provides an overview of safe work practices (housekeeping, ergonomics, fall protection) in the office, and regulatory standards affecting offices, including exits, aisles, clearance for sprinkler systems, materials storage, and electrical safety. Office and department administrators responsible for facility design and arrangement, supervisors of office staff, and department personnel receive this training to assure offices meet regulatory requirements and to facilitate ergonomic improvements.

Personal Protective Equipment

This training provides an overview of the UMES Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Program. PPE is designed to protect employees from the hazards in their work area. These hazards may include eye, face, head, feet, and hand hazards. Supervisors will be shown how to perform a Hazard Assessment of their work area in order to identify situations requiring PPE, proper selection and use of PPE, and documentation of this information.

Radiation Safety

Radiation Safety Training is required for personnel working with radioactive materials, or working in or frequenting restricted areas where radioactive materials are used and stored.

Respiratory Protection

Respiratory Protection Training is required for all university employees who use respirators. Training includes information on the OSHA Respiratory Protection standard, care and use of the respirator, limitations, fit testing, and cleaning & maintenance.

Spill Prevention Control & Countermeasures

Spill Prevention Control & Countermeasures (SPCC) Training is required for all University personnel with responsibilities for the management of oil, including delivery, maintenance, storage, disposal, or spill response. Training includes familiarization with the SPCC Plan, operation and maintenance of equipment to prevent discharges of oil, emergency response procedures, and applicable pollution control laws, rules and regulations.

Trenching & Shoring

All personnel involved in trenching or excavation work must receive Trenching and Shoring Training.
