General or Municipal Waste

General waste or “municipal waste” is managed by the Physical Plant and is often disposed of in sanitary landfills.  The only major requirement for this class of waste is that it cannot be mixed with regulated or controlled waste.

Any office waste, general laboratory or maintenance and operations waste not contaminated with infectious agents, hazardous chemicals, or radioactive materials:

  • Office waste
  • Disposable laboratory plasticware
  • Broken glass
  • Uncontaminated animal bedding
  • Chemical bottles

Disposal Guidelines

Office Waste Place in waste container lined with a plastic bag.
Recyclable Office Paper (mixed paper, newspaper) Place in appropriately labeled containers in your building. Recyclable paper is commingled into one container and emptied daily.
Miscellaneous Recyclable Items (plastic bottles, aluminum cans) Place in appropriately labeled containers in your building. Miscellaneous recyclable items are commingled into one container and emptied daily.
General Laboratory Glassware and Broken Glass
  1. Place in a sturdy closable cardboard box for disposal.
  2. Dispose in building dumpster.
Uncontaminated Animal Bedding
  1. Place bedding in an opaque plastic bag with no visible “biohazard” markings. Do NOT exceed 35 pounds for each bag.
  2. Seal bag with tape.
  3. Dispose in building dumpster.
