Environmental Health and Safety supports the UMES community in fostering a safe, compliant, and sustainable environment for teaching, research, and service. This is achieved through comprehensive training programs, advisory committees, and policies that promote research and workplace safety while advancing environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance.

  • Welcome to EHS webpage 2.0.1 The latest update is that the EHS website has been overhauled and modernized. Note: There are still sprints to be completed. 
  • Campus Safety Announcements – Sign up for “Hawk Alerts” which will enable your mobile device to receive free emergency broadcast text alerts from UMES Public Safety. Text “Hawkalert” to 226787 and you will be automatically enrolled. When you do this you will receive an acknowledgement that you are in the Hawk Alert system. 
  • Training Updates- EHS-related trainings are still being finalized as part of the UMES migration process to workday. For a list of topics refer to the Training Guide. 
  • Regulatory Updates-ISO 3941:2026 introduced Class L for lithium ion-battery fires which recognizes the unique hazards associated with lithium-ion battery thermal runaway and may influence future fire protection practices. Unlike conventional fires, lithium-ion battery fires involve electrochemical reactions that can generate significant heat, release flammable and toxic gases, and reignite after appearing to be extinguished.
