Dr. Reginald ‘Reg’ Miller has been named the new Associate Dean for Research and Innovation for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore School of Veterinary Medicine.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore School of Veterinary Medicine (UMES SVM) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Reginald Miller as its new Associate Dean for Research and Innovation. Dr. Miller began his role December 2025 and will be responsible for leading the development of the School’s research enterprise, including research infrastructure planning, compliance oversight, and the expansion of strategic research partnerships.

Dr. Miller brings nearly 30 years of experience in research administration, with particular expertise in infrastructure development and operational leadership. Since 2000, he has served within the Mount Sinai Health System, including the past 11 years in senior roles at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He has also served as the Dean for Research Operations and Infrastructure at the Icahn School of Medicine.

“I am very excited to be part of UMES’ effort to create new opportunities that address the lack of diversity and growing need for veterinarians in the workforce,” Dr. Miller said. “I especially look forward to mentoring the next generation of veterinary research professionals.”

Earlier in his career, Dr. Miller served as Section Veterinary Medicine Chief at Columbia University’s Institute of Comparative Medicine and held veterinary consulting roles with Fordham University, the New York City Department of Health, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, and Purdue Pharmaceuticals. At Mount Sinai, he has also served as co-chair of several institutional committees and has held the role of Senior Research Integrity Officer since 2008.

“Dr. Miller brings exceptional expertise in research operations and a proven commitment to expanding scientific discovery,” said Dr. Stanley Robertson, Dean of the UMES School of Veterinary Medicine. “His leadership will be instrumental in building a strong research foundation that supports faculty excellence, student engagement, and the School’s mission to serve Maryland and the broader veterinary community.”

Dr. Miller earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Tuskegee University in 1982 and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee University’s School of Veterinary Medicine in 1986. From 1988 to 1991, he completed a residency in laboratory animal and zoological medicine through the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in partnership with the Seneca Park Zoo.

Throughout his career, Dr. Miller has received numerous honors, including the 2018 Innovators in Science & Medicine Award and the 2019 Jacobi Medallion Award from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Health.

In addition to his research leadership, Dr. Miller serves as Director of Mount Sinai’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Engagement Initiative, which works to strengthen and expand partnerships with HBCU medical schools, undergraduate institutions, and the Icahn School of Medicine.

Dr. Miller’s appointment marks the first addition to Dean Robertson’s leadership team as the UMES School of Veterinary Medicine advances toward its anticipated 2027 opening, pending approval from the American Veterinary Medical Association.
