Bio
Dr. Matthew D. Balish is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Practice Lab coordinator in the Department of Pharmacy Practice & Administration. Before joining the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Dr.Balish practiced in the community setting for 9 years. He worked at two independent pharmacists Pemberton Pharmacy and Gift and then Apple Discount Drugs. He is a second-generation pharmacist who currently holds licenses in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.
In his time working as a community pharmacist, he has been an active member of the Maryland Pharmacists Association, serving on several committees including Advocacy, Resolutions, Communication, and CBD and Cannabis. He served as Vice-Speaker and Speaker of the House for MPhA in 2018-2019 and has been Co-Editor of the annual Fader’s Pharmacy Law Book since 2018. Following his young daughter’s Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis, Dr. Balish became a Certified Diabetes Educator and currently sits on the Maryland Diabetes Quality Task Force for the Maryland Department of Health. He has also been active in community outreach and education in his capacity as a community pharmacist talking to civic groups about pharmacy-related topics.
In his personal life, Matt is active in the community with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as both an Assistant Scoutmaster for his son’s Troop and working with younger children in the Cub Scout program as a Den Leader and Pack Committee Member. Matt also serves as an officer in The Furnace Town Blacksmith Guild as the newsletter editor and is a student of ornamental metalwork. He has lived on Maryland’s Eastern Shore for 33 years and is married to his lovely wife, Anne, with whom he has two children.
