Understanding Barriers to the Use of Agricultural Programs in Maryland

Summary

Explore the opportunities and challenges that historically underserved farmers and agricultural communities see and face.

Description

Dan Sweeney and Dr. Matthew Houser of The Nature Conservancy’s Maryland/DC Chapter invite you to join a discussion related to understanding barriers to entry and ability to access conservation programs in Maryland. In partnership with UMES Extension, this informal dialogue will explore the opportunities and challenges that historically underserved farmers and agricultural communities see and face, and especially what factors shape underserved farmers’ participation in federal agricultural programs, such as Wetland Reserve Easements program. This will be an opportunity to build relationships, participate in honest discussion, and document barriers faced by farmers, as well as brainstorm about ways to support and develop opportunities for the future.

Special Visit by:

  1. The Common Market. A representative with The Common Market will be on-hand to speak about their successes working with small family farms within the region and discuss potential marketing opportunities for farmers interested in being a partner. The Common Market is a nonprofit regional wholesale food distributor on a mission to connect communities to good food grown by sustainable family farmers.
  2. Maryland Department of Agriculture. Bill Tharpe, Program Administrator Small Farm & Urban Agriculture Resource Conservation with the MDA will speak about MDA’s Small Farm and Urban Agriculture program and the multiple financial assistance programs that will be available in 2023.
