Growing and Processing Medicinal Herbs: Session IV

If you are relatively new to growing medicinal herbs or considering growing medicinal herbs, this series offered by UMES Extension is for you.

With four webinars and one field day we will focus on much of what you need to know to be successful. Participants in the series will also be able to consult with our herb specialist, Henriette den Ouden, between webinar sessions.

While each session has separate registration, participation in all sessions is encouraged to build your knowledge base. (Select the session date before clicking “reserve a spot”, then repeat for the next date.)

ABOUT THE WEBINARS:

January 22, noon-1 p.m., Webinar I: Timing is All

Participants will create a yearlong herb growing planner. Working with this, you will know when to: plant seeds, plugs or roots; harvest; make cuttings; and improve your soil. The class will focus with what to do now: buying seeds and plugs, planting early seeds such as skullcap or chamomile, prepare your soil and what tools you need to be ready for the year.

February 5, noon-1 p.m., Webinar II: Growing Roots and Rhizomes

You will learn about starting, growing and harvesting a root crop, as well as all you need to know about annual roots, bi-annual and perennial roots/rhizomes, including soil requirements, vulnerability for pests and irrigation needs. Second, you will learn how to dry a root crop and what the market is.

February 26, noon-1 p.m., Webinar III: Leafy Herbs and Flowers

Learn about starting, growing and harvesting flowers or/and leaves. We discuss several herbs including natives, tropical herbs, perennials and (bi-)annuals. Learn about soil requirements, vulnerability for pests and irrigation needs, and how to dry flowers and leaves, and the market for the dried herbs.

March 12, noon- 1 p.m., Webinar IV: From Harvest to Value-Added Product

Learn how to get from the raw herb to teas, salves, tinctures, syrups and mocktails. Understand the different processes, regulatory challenges and packaging choices. Additionally, we will discuss how and where you can market your product and what the value can be.

IN-PERSON EVENT :

The webinars will be capped by a Field Day (separate registration required) on April 26 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the UMES herb garden in Princess Anne, where you take part in seeding and planting activities. Learn when and how UMES Extension uses ground covers, shade covers, a greenhouse and irrigation systems. Learn about pest control.
