ATOD Prevention Center

GREETINGS FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) Prevention Center Website.  We are delighted that you have taken the time to visit our site and see what exciting programs and events we have to offer.

The ATOD Prevention Center has been on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) since 1998, after receiving partial funding from the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration (ADAA), a division of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). Since that time, the ATOD Prevention Center has been 100% funded by ADAA in an effort to provide ATOD prevention efforts to college students. We are one of four Centers located on college campuses in the state of Maryland (there are Centers located at Bowie State University, Frostburg State University, and Towson University).

The ATOD Prevention Center is under the leadership of the School of Education, Social Sciences, and The Arts and Dr. Kimberly Poole-Sykes, the Principal Investigator for the Center.  We are located in the Lida Brown Building on the UMES Campus.

The ATOD Prevention Center is committed to educating our students on issues pertaining to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, and sexual responsibility so that our students are able to make more informed, responsible choices and decisions regarding substance using behavior and overall student wellness.

In collaboration with other departments on campus and the UMES Peer Education Network, we provide a variety of awareness campaigns, programs, activities and events that help students realize that their choices and decisions not only impact themselves, but also their family, friends, roommates, UMES, and the surrounding community.
