PRINCESS ANNE, MD – The inaugural Roger R. Blunt Construction Management Lecture Series at UMES is on Tuesday, October 16, at 11 a.m. in the Student Service Center Theater. Blunt’s talk, “Breaking New Ground in Africa,” is free and open to the public.
CEO of Essex Construction LLC, Roger Blunt (Major General, Ret.) is a civil engineer and nuclear engineer, registered professionally in New York State and the District of Columbia. A West Point graduate, he holds two master’s degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Doctor of Public Service from UMES.
Essex Construction, LLC, founded in 1982, provides general contracting, construction management and design/build services for commercial and institutional clients in the Greater Metropolitan Washington, D.C. region and the Baltimore Metropolitan area. Essex specializes in complex interior renovation projects for hospitals, universities and office buildings. Additionally, Essex’s construction services include religious, educational and multi-unit housing.
For over 30 years, Blunt has exercised technical supervision and executive oversight in the successful completion of projects totaling more than $500 million in construction value.
Blunt is former chairman of the board of directors of the University System of Maryland Foundation. He has long been an advocate and supporter of the UMES Construction Management Technology program. His son, Jonathan Blunt, executive vice president of Essex Construction, is a 1993 graduate of the UMES construction management program. In 2002, Roger Blunt established the Roger R. Blunt Construction Management Endowed Fund to support student scholarships, student recruitment and an endowed chair.
The UMES Construction Management Technology program prepares students for professional careers in the construction industry. Classroom lectures and laboratory courses are combined with internship experiences in construction technology, architecture and business administration to prepare professional with the ability to manage and supervise the total construction process. Graduates qualify for employment with residential and commercial general contracting and sub-contracting firms and in government.
