Applying to the Richard A. Henson Honors Program
First-Year students / incoming Freshmen
Eligibility
To apply to the Honors Program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, an applicant should demonstrate strong academic preparation in the sciences, mathematics, and humanities. Preference is given to Maryland residents. Normally, students are admitted at the beginning of the fall semester. Applications received by February 1 are given priority consideration. Students are encouraged to apply for admission no later than March 1 of the year of desired admission.
Successful applicants must have graduated from an accredited high school and typically have a/an:
- Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.3 or higher;
- SAT score of at least 1650 (if Math + Verbal only, then 1100+) or an ACT score of at least 25;
- High School class rank in the top 10%;
- History of leadership, service, community engagement, and co-curricular activity.
Application Procedure
Admission into the Richard A. Henson Honors Program is selective and by separate application:
1. The applicant must first complete an application to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and arrange for supporting documentation (test scores; transcripts; letters of recommendation) to be sent to:

2. The applicant should then complete the application to the Honors Program, to be accompanied by a resume and personal essay:
The resume should detail leadership roles held; awards/honors received; co-curricular activities; community service efforts; and other indicators of the applicant’s performance and success.
The personal essay should express why admission into the Honors Program is sought, including specific reference to features of the Henson Program at UMES that are of particular interest to the applicant and what talents or experiences the applicant hopes to contribute to the UMES community. Suggested length of the essay is +/- 250 words.
3. The completed Honors Program application, resume, and essay should be sent to:
