The workshop, initially planned for two days, will now be held on just one day — Saturday, April 19, with extended hours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
All of the topics related to setting up the hives and managing bee colony will be covered in this condensed workshop.
The cost of the one-day workshop now is $25.

Get beekeeping basics at a hands-on workshop April 12-13 at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Extension’s apiary in Princess Anne.
Geared toward newcomers to beekeeping, the two-day, hands-on workshop will be hosted by Stephen Goewey, beekeeper and program assistant of UMES Extension’s Apiary Program.
It will offer an introduction to beekeeping, and essential knowledge and practical skills needed to start and maintain a healthy bee colony.
The first day of the program focuses on understanding the biology of honeybees, colony structure and the role of the beekeeper. Hive components, tools and protective gear will be covered and participants will assemble and set up beehive boxes in UMES’ apiary. Site selection, hive placement and best practices will be discussed.
A live demonstration of how to safely introduce bees to a new hive is the highlight of the second day of the workshop. Attendees will suit up to install a Nuc (nucleus colony) or package of bees into the hives. Tips on beehive inspections, feeding and early colony management will be shared.
The workshop sessions take place at UMES’ Research, Extension and Teaching Farm on Stewart Neck Road in Princess Anne from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. each day. Pre-registration is required as attendance is limited to 25 people. The cost is $50 per person for both days and includes lunch.
The two-day schedule is:
Day 1: Beekeeping Basics & Equipment Setup
- Introduction to beekeeping: Understanding honeybee biology, colony structure and the beekeeper’s role.
- Overview of essential beekeeping equipment, including hive components, tools and protective gear.
- Hands-on session: Assembling and setting up beehive boxes in preparation for new colonies.
- Visit to the bee yard: Site selection, hive placement and best practices for maintaining a productive apiary.
Day 2: Hands-On Hive Installation & Beekeeping Demonstration
- Live demonstration: How to introduce bees to a new hive safely and effectively.
- Hands-on experience: Participants will suit up and install a Nuc (nucleus colony) or package of bees into their hives.
- Discussion on hive inspections, feeding and early colony management.
- Q&A session and next steps for new beekeepers.
The dates and times may change as bee installation is weather-dependent. Those who preregistered will be alerted to any changes via email.
